Last updated: August 2026

Microsoft has shipped six image models in ten months, and the newest — MAI-Image-2.6 — walked into Arena's text-to-image leaderboard at No.2 on launch day. If you run a Shopify store, an ad account, or a client roster, the Microsoft AI image generator conversation has moved past "is it good enough?" The questions that decide budgets now are: where exactly do I get 2.6, what am I legally allowed to do with it, and what does volume cost?

Most coverage stops at the leaderboard headline. This guide covers what actually hits your P&L: the Playground's exact rate limits, the commercial-use restriction that catches nearly every first-time user, the published API pricing ladder for the 2.5 family, and ten prompts you can paste into production today. Everything here is drawn from Microsoft's own announcements and verified product pages — where a claim is the vendor's, it says so. We also map which Microsoft surface runs which model, because Bing, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and the Playground are not on the same version.

Short answer: MAI-Image-2.6 is free to try in MAI Playground at 2 requests/minute and 20 images/day — for personal, non-commercial use only. Commercial output runs on the 2.5 family via Bing or the Foundry and OpenRouter APIs at $19.50–$106 per million output tokens. MAI-Image-2.6 API pricing is not published yet.

What MAI-Image-2.6 actually is

MAI-Image-2.6 is the newest image model from Microsoft AI, the division led by Mustafa Suleyman. It launched on August 10, 2026, and per Microsoft's own announcement it entered Arena at No.2 in text-to-image, "ahead of leading models from Meta, Google and xAI." An August 18 update lifted its image-editing rank from No.5 to No.3 (+19 Elo), which Microsoft describes as ahead of Google's Nano Banana family and Meta's Muse Image.

The model sits inside a seven-model family announced on June 2, 2026: MAI-Image-2.5 and 2.5-Flash, MAI-Voice-2, MAI-Transcribe-1.5, MAI-Thinking-1, and a code model. All ship through Azure AI Foundry, plus OpenRouter, Fireworks, and Baseten — which matters for smaller teams, because you can bill MAI-Image per use on OpenRouter without signing an Azure agreement.

Versus MAI-Image-2.5, the 2.6 release is a quality jump rather than a new category: +79 Elo overall in text-to-image, with the sharpest gains landing exactly where commerce work breaks on other models — text inside images (+91 Elo), edited text rendering (+43), and Product, Branding & Commercial Design (+38).

Right now 2.6 exists in two places only: MAI Playground, where it is the default image model, and a Foundry Private Preview you have to apply for. Every consumer-facing Microsoft surface still runs the 2.5 family — worth knowing before you promise a client "2.6 everywhere." Context matters here: Bing Image Creator's original engine was DALL-E 3, and OpenAI has since wound down that pipeline — a shift we covered in the DALL-E and GPT-image retirement. The MAI line is Microsoft's replacement.

Why the launch numbers matter for marketing teams

Elo points stay abstract until you map them to assets you actually ship:

  • +91 Elo in text rendering — posters with real headlines, packaging labels, price flashes on banners. Garbled text is the single failure that kept AI images out of anything print-adjacent.
  • +38 Elo in Product, Branding & Commercial Design — pack shots, hero banners, branded backdrops. This is the category closest to what a DTC brand pays a studio to produce.
  • +43 Elo in edited text rendering — change the "£19" on a label to "£24" without regenerating the whole shot. Editing rank moved No.5 → No.3 on the strength of gains like this.

Adoption pressure is not hypothetical: nearly three quarters of businesses say AI is already transforming their marketing processes, per an August 2026 London Loves Business report. Competitors are past the debate stage and onto unit-cost math.

Microsoft's internal deployments are the strongest cost signal available. After switching to MAI-Image-2.5, PowerPoint cut GPU costs up to 84% versus GPT-Image-2; OneDrive logged +26% save rates, roughly 25% lower P95 latency, and 2.5x efficiency; Dynamics 365 Contact Center cut GPU costs up to 89%. When Microsoft re-tools its own highest-volume surfaces onto these models, the efficiency story has at least been stress-tested internally. For where the MAI line sits in the wider field, our best AI image generators for marketers roundup compares it with the tools you may already pay for.

How to try MAI-Image-2.6 free: the Playground walkthrough

The only place a regular user can touch 2.6 today is MAI Playground. Five minutes, no credit card:

  1. Open playground.microsoft.ai and sign in with a Microsoft account. There is an 18+ age gate.
  2. Pick the model. MAI-Image-2.6 is the default — billed in the picker as "Generate high quality images from text prompts." The same menu holds MAI-Image-2.5 (with a Flash variant), MAI-Voice-2, MAI-Transcribe-1.5, and MAI-Thinking-1.
  3. Choose Fast or Quality before generating. Fast returns 4 variations per run — use it to explore ad directions quickly. Quality returns 1 image — use it for the final pick.
  4. Iterate with editing. A session holds up to 6 images, and any of them can be edited: swap a background and match shadows, or replace label text while keeping the bottle untouched.
  5. Respect the ceiling. MAI-Image-2.6 allows 2 requests per minute and 20 images per day per user, with IP-level caps of 3 per minute and 60 per day. MAI-Image-2.5-Flash allows 3 requests per minute under the same 20-per-day limit.

Two caveats before you plan a team session around it. The Playground is a limited preview — US-select-markets at launch, with the EU listed as "coming soon" — so availability genuinely moves around by region. And prompts work best written in English even when your store sells in other languages: render the art clean, then overlay your copy. If the Playground is unavailable in your market, our guide to creating AI images free compares the other no-cost routes.

The commercial-use trap — and the decision tree that routes around it

Here is the fact most launch coverage skips: the Playground terms state it "is intended for personal, non-commercial use only." Free does not mean licensed. Images generated there cannot legally ship into your ads, your product pages, or client deliverables.

That makes the Playground a testing surface, not a production surface. Route accordingly:

  • You want to evaluate 2.6. Playground: free, 20 images/day. Test prompts, judge quality against your SKUs, then discard.
  • You need commercial assets today. Use the 2.5 family: Bing Image Creator for quick drafts under its own terms, or the Foundry/OpenRouter API for production volume at the prices below.
  • You need 2.6 specifically at commercial scale. Apply to the Foundry Private Preview at aka.ms/mai-image-2.6-PrPr-access. Approval timelines are unpublished, so build on 2.5 while you wait.
  • You need text inside the image in a non-Latin script. Microsoft has published no claim here; treat non-Latin scripts as unverified and overlay real text in Canva or ArWriter instead.

The full MAI-Image API price ladder (and which tier fits which asset)

Microsoft bills image models per million tokens, with separate rates for text input, image input, and image output. The published ladder, verified against Microsoft's model announcements:

ModelText-inImage-inImage-outBest fit
MAI-Image-2.5-Flash$1.75$1.75$19.50Social volume: thumbnails, ad variants, UGC-style frames
MAI-Image-2.5$5$8$47Product pages: hero shots on white, lifestyle scenes
MAI-Image-2.5-Pro$5$8$106Campaign finals: packaging mockups, print-adjacent heroes
MAI-Image-2-Efficient$5$19.50High-volume pipelines, ~41% cheaper than MAI-Image-2
MAI-Image-2.6Not publishedPlayground only + Private Preview

Two honesty notes before you model costs. MAI-Image-2.6 pricing has not been published — anyone quoting a per-image price for it is guessing. And Microsoft has released no tokens-per-image figure, so converting token prices into per-image math is not possible either; budget per million output tokens and calibrate against your first month of real usage.

The cheapest entry point is OpenRouter: no Azure agreement, per-use billing, same 2.5-family models. To see how those rates compare with Google's and OpenAI's image APIs, we maintain a running image generation pricing comparison.

Testing all of this by hand gets old fast. ArWriter bundles image generation with a prompt library built for commerce assets, alongside 37+ writing and content tools, from $4.99/month — one workspace for the images and the copy that ships beside them. Start at app.arwriterai.com.

OneDrive photo editing: 2.5. Playground: 2.6. If your company runs Microsoft 365, your colleagues already touch these models daily without knowing it.

A worked example: rebuilding product photography for a DTC brand

To make the economics concrete, here is a worked example with illustrative numbers — a composite, not a sourced case study.

Maya runs a 12-SKU home-fragrance brand from Leeds. Her studio charges £35–£60 per finished product shot, so a seasonal refresh across the range plus ad variants pushes her past £2,000 a year on photography.

Her workflow on the MAI line:

  • Week 1, free: 20 Playground images a day for five working days = 100 concepts at zero cost. Fast mode's 4 variations per run let her explore directions instead of betting on single throws. None of it ships — non-commercial terms.
  • Week 2, API: the surviving concepts get rebuilt on MAI-Image-2.5 at $47/1M output tokens for the product-page set, with Flash at $19.50 absorbing the social volume around each drop.
  • Finals: the two campaign heroes per season go through 2.5-Pro at $106, where fidelity matters most and volume is lowest.

She drafts each prompt once in ArWriter's image prompt library, regenerates per SKU, and writes the captions and product copy in the same workspace. Her photography line drops by roughly 70%, and the constraint shifts from budget to taste — which is where it should sit. For the full playbook on lighting, backgrounds, and cross-SKU consistency, our AI product photography guide transfers directly to the MAI models.

MAI-Image vs Nano Banana vs GPT-Image: the published numbers only

Every figure below comes from Microsoft's own announcement posts. Google and OpenAI have not been asked to confirm them, and no independent leaderboard verification was available at publish time. Treat the table as Microsoft's claim sheet:

Secondary reporting adds one wrinkle: 24/7 Wall St. wrote in late August that a MAI-Image-2.6 preview had reached the top editing rank, while Microsoft's own update says No.3. Where the two conflict, this guide sides with the primary source and attributes the stronger claim.

The practical read for buyers: the quality gap has closed enough that model choice is now a licensing-and-cost decision more than a quality cliff. If your stack already runs on Google's models, our step-by-step Nano Banana guide and the Nano Banana vs ChatGPT image comparison cover the switching math from the other side.

Ten prompts to copy for product pages, ads, and social

Paste these into the Playground — or any image tool — and swap the product noun for yours. Prompts are English-trained, so write the prompt in English even when your store's language is not.

Product hero, for white-background listings:

Background swap, using the editing capability:

Keep the product exactly as is, replace background with a clean beige studio backdrop, match shadows and lighting

Label text update — a direct test of the +91 Elo text-rendering claim:

Replace the text on the label with "SOY WAX 220g", keep font style, bottle and lighting unchanged

Seasonal banner with room for your headline:

Minimal winter sales banner background, warm golden light and deep teal palette, large empty center area for offer text, no text in image

Blog cover:

Brand spokesperson portrait:

Corporate portrait of a friendly consultant, natural office light, neutral blazer, looking at camera, photorealistic, shallow depth of field

UGC-style shot for social proof ads:

One caution before shipping: in-image text is verified for English at these Elo gains, while non-Latin scripts remain unverified — overlay anything in Arabic, Thai, or Hindi rather than generating it. For a deeper bench, our best AI image prompts for 2026 collection extends this set, and ArWriter's image prompt library keeps the tested versions organized by asset type.

Questions marketers actually ask about MAI-Image-2.6

What is MAI-Image-2.6 and how is it different from MAI-Image-2.5?

It is Microsoft's newest image model, launched August 10, 2026. Per Microsoft, it scores +79 Elo over 2.5 in text-to-image, with the largest gains in text rendering (+91) and commercial design (+38). Unlike 2.5, it is not yet in Bing, PowerPoint, or OneDrive — only MAI Playground and a Foundry Private Preview.

How do I access Microsoft MAI-Image-2.6 for free?

Sign in at playground.microsoft.ai with a Microsoft account (18+). MAI-Image-2.6 is the default image model — no credit card, no waitlist in supported regions. Availability is US-select-markets with the EU "coming soon," so access varies by location. If blocked, Bing Image Creator offers free access to the 2.5 family.

What are MAI Playground's daily limits for image generation?

MAI-Image-2.6 allows 2 requests per minute and 20 images per day per user, with IP-level caps of 3 per minute and 60 per day. MAI-Image-2.5-Flash allows 3 requests per minute under the same 20-per-day cap. Sessions hold up to 6 images for editing.

Can I use MAI Playground images commercially (for ads or my store)?

No. The Playground terms state it "is intended for personal, non-commercial use only," so output cannot legally appear in ads, store pages, or client work. Test there, then produce commercially on the 2.5 family via Bing's terms or the Foundry/OpenRouter API — or apply for the 2.6 Private Preview.

What model powers Bing Image Creator in 2026?

MAI-Image-2.5, end-to-end, per Microsoft's July 23, 2026 announcement. The same family powers PowerPoint's image-to-image feature and OneDrive's default photo editing. MAI-Image-2.6 has not been announced for Bing or Copilot; it lives in MAI Playground and the Foundry Private Preview.

Is MAI-Image-2.6 better than Google's Nano Banana for product images?

On Microsoft's published numbers, 2.6 leads the Nano Banana family in editing rank (No.3, per Microsoft) and gained +38 Elo in Product, Branding & Commercial Design — the category closest to product shots. These are vendor claims, not independent verification, so test both against your own SKUs before committing budget.

How much does the Microsoft MAI-Image API cost per image?

There is no official per-image price: billing runs per million tokens, and Microsoft publishes no tokens-per-image figure. The published ladder is $19.50 (Flash), $47 (2.5), and $106 (2.5-Pro) per 1M image-output tokens. Any per-image quote you see is an estimate; 2.6 pricing is unpublished.

Does MAI-Image render text inside images accurately (and in other languages)?

English text rendering improved +91 Elo in 2.6, and edited text rendering +43 — label and poster work is the point of this release. Microsoft has made no claim about non-Latin scripts, so treat Arabic, Hindi, or Thai in-image text as unverified: generate clean art and overlay real text.

Your move

Six releases in ten months says Microsoft now treats image generation as infrastructure: priced from $19.50 per million output tokens, and shipped into surfaces your team already opens daily. The window where your competitors haven't costed this out is closing.

Start narrow. Take one product line, run the free 20-a-day Playground test for a week, and log which prompts survive contact with your brand. Then move production onto the API tier that matches the asset — Flash for volume, standard for pages, Pro for heroes — and keep licensing clean from day one.

If you would rather not stitch together a prompt library, an image API, and a copy workflow, ArWriter does it in one place: image generation, a curated prompt library, and 37+ content tools from $4.99/month.
